What is Subnautica (Nitrox)
Subnautica shipped as a single player game and Unknown Worlds never added multiplayer. Nitrox did. It is an open source modification that syncs the world, the vehicles and the bases between players, and it has been in active development for years. If you want to explore planet 4546B with friends, Nitrox on a dedicated server is how it is done. A dedicated server matters more here than in most co-op games. Nitrox keeps world state on the server, so bases you build and wrecks you strip persist whether or not the person who started the session is online. Running it on your own machine means the world is only alive when you are, which defeats the point of a survival game played over weeks. Be clear about what this is: Nitrox is a community mod, not an official feature, and it carries the rough edges you would expect from one. Some things sync less completely than others, and a Nitrox release can require everyone to update at once. We are templating it now, with version control you own rather than surprise updates, save management, world backups and config editing from the panel. Watch this page for the order button. If you are after official multiplayer instead, that is Subnautica 2, which we also list, though Unknown Worlds have not announced a dedicated server tool for it.
