Are you having trouble connecting to your Valheim server?
You're not alone—this is a common issue for many players. We often get asked "why can't I connect to my server" or "my dedicated server failed to connect". This guide will help you get connected to your server.
Step 1: Check Your Server is running
Before troubleshooting, ensure that your Valheim server is online and running. You can do this by:
- Logging into your server hosting control panel.
- Verifying that the server status shows as "Running."
- Restarting the server if necessary.
If your server isn't running or showing (StartError or Running (PID ) - please contact support!) , start it up and try connecting again. If you are running this outside of our control panel we will soon be creating another guide to cover this step in more detail.
If you are running mods on the server, then this is the most likely cause for the server to be offline!
Step 2: Verify Your Server Details
Make sure you have the correct server information:
- Server IP Address: Double-check that you're entering the correct IP address.
- Port Number: Most Valheim servers use the default port
2456
. We use a different port:27535
- Password: If your server requires a password, confirm it is correct.
You can find these details our control panel or from the person managing the server.
Step 3: Check Your Internet Connection
Your connection to the internet can affect your ability to join the server.
- Ensure your internet is stable and not dropping out.
- Restart your modem or router to refresh the connection.
- Test your connection speed—slow speeds or high ping can prevent connection.
Step 4: Update Valheim on both the client and the server
Outdated versions of Valheim can cause connection issues. Make sure both your game and server are running the latest version:
- Open Steam.
- Navigate to Valheim in your library.
- Click Properties > Updates and ensure automatic updates are enabled.
- Restart your server to apply the latest patches.
- Navigate to the control panel
- Click 'Steam Update'
This ensures both you and the server are fully up to date.
Step 5: Disable Firewalls or Antivirus Temporarily
Firewalls or antivirus programs may block the connection:
- Temporarily disable your firewall or antivirus.
- Try reconnecting to the server.
- If successful, add Valheim and Steam to your firewall's or antivirus's exceptions list to prevent future issues.
Warning:
Re-enable your firewall or antivirus after testing for security.
Step 6: Use Direct Connect
If the in-game server browser isn't working, try connecting directly:
- Launch Valheim.
- Click Start Game and select your character.
- Click Join Game
- Click *Add server
- Enter the server's IP address and port (e.g.,
92.118.16.100:27535
).
Step 7: Contact Your Host or Server Admin
If you've tried everything and still can't connect:
- Contact us on one of our support channels and we will get it working for you!
- If a friend manages the server, ask them to check server logs for errors or misconfigurations.
Additional Notes
- Steam Authentication Issues: Sometimes, restarting Steam or your PC can resolve issues.
- Mod Compatibility: If you're using mods, ensure they are compatible with the server.
Port Forwarding Configuration - Non LOW.MS
Servers require specific ports to be open for connections. Check that your router has port forwarding set up correctly:
- Access your router settings (refer to your router's manual for details).
- Forward the following ports:
- UDP 2456-2458
- Restart your router after saving changes.
