This guide shows you how to install Hytale mods from Curseforge on your dedicated server, whether you're using the LOW.MS panel or managing files manually.
Note: Hytale is in Early Access and the modding ecosystem is still developing. Always back up your server before installing mods, and expect some mods to break after game updates.
What is Curseforge?
Curseforge is a popular platform for game mods, including Hytale mods. It provides:
- A large library of community-created mods
- Version tracking and updates
- Easy downloads and mod management
Many Hytale mods are distributed through Curseforge, making it the go-to place to find server mods, asset packs, and plugins.
Method 1: Install Curseforge Mods via LOW.MS Panel (Easiest)
If you're hosting with LOW.MS, you can install Curseforge mods directly from the panel.
Step 1: Stop Your Server
- Go to your server panel
- Click Stop to shut down the server
Step 2: Open the Curse Mods Browser
- In your panel, find Curse Mods or Mod Manager
- Click to open the mod browser

Step 3: Search and Install
- Use the search bar to find mods by name
- Browse categories to discover new mods
- Click Install on any mod you want
Step 4: Start Your Server
- Click Start to boot the server
- Watch the console for mod loading messages
- Check for any errors
That's it! The panel handles downloading, placing files, and version management automatically.
Method 2: Install Curseforge Mods Manually (SFTP/File Manager)
Use this method if your host doesn't have a Curseforge integration, or if you prefer manual control.
Step 1: Download the Mod from Curseforge
- Go to curseforge.com
- Search for Hytale mods
- Find the mod you want and check compatibility with your server version
- Click Download to get the mod file (usually
.zipor.jar)
Step 2: Stop Your Server
Always stop the server before uploading mod files.
Step 3: Upload to the Mods Folder
- Connect to your server via SFTP or use the File Manager
- Navigate to your server's
mods/folder - Upload the downloaded mod file as-is (don't unzip unless the mod instructions say to)
Common folder locations:
mods/hytale/Server/mods/(some hosts)
Step 4: Start the Server
- Start your server
- Check the console/logs for mod loading confirmation
- Look for any error messages
Server-Side vs Client-Side Mods
Not all mods work the same way:
Server-Side Mods
- Run on the server only
- Players don't need to install anything
- Examples: admin tools, gameplay tweaks, server utilities
Client-Side Mods
- Must be installed on both server AND player clients
- Players need to download the mod too
- Examples: new items, textures, UI changes
Both (Required on Server + Client)
- Most content mods fall into this category
- The server needs the mod for gameplay logic
- Players need the mod to see/use the content
Check the mod's Curseforge page for installation requirements.
Installing Multiple Mods
When installing multiple mods:
- Check compatibility - some mods conflict with each other
- Install one at a time - makes troubleshooting easier
- Test after each install - verify the server still boots
- Read mod dependencies - some mods require other mods to work
Updating Curseforge Mods
Via LOW.MS Panel
- Open Curse Mods
- Go to Installed Mods
- Click Update on any mods with available updates
Manually
- Stop the server

Removing Mods
Via LOW.MS Panel
- Open Curse Mods → Installed Mods
- Click Uninstall on the mod
Manually
- Stop the server
- Delete the mod file from
mods/ - Start the server
Warning: Removing mods that added content to your world may cause issues. Back up your
universe/folder first.
Troubleshooting
Mod doesn't load
- Check the mod is in the correct
mods/folder - Verify the mod supports your Hytale server version
- Look at server logs for error messages
- Try removing other mods to isolate the issue
Server won't start after adding mod
- Remove the last mod you added
- Check if the mod has dependencies you're missing
- Verify the file isn't corrupted (re-download)
- Check logs in
logs/folder for specific errors
"Early plugin" mods not loading
Some server plugins require a startup flag:
java -jar HytaleServer.jar --assets Assets.zip --accept-early-plugins
In LOW.MS, look for an "Accept Early Plugins" toggle in your server settings.
Mod works in singleplayer but not on server
- The mod may be client-side only
- Check if there's a separate server version
- Some mods don't support dedicated servers yet
Best Practices
- Always backup first - before installing any mod, backup
universe/and your config files - Check version compatibility - mods built for older Hytale versions may not work
- Read the mod description - installation requirements and known issues are usually listed
- Start small - don't install 20 mods at once
- Keep mods updated - outdated mods can cause issues after Hytale updates
