Yes. Jagex publish a dedicated server as a free separate download on Steam, so your world can run independently of any one player's machine. That is what turns Dragonwilds from a few co-op sessions into a save your group actually returns to.
It is a separate game rather than part of the MMO. Dragonwilds is a standalone open world survival crafting game set in the RuneScape universe, with familiar skills and lore but its own progression on its own map. Your Old School or RuneScape 3 account and stats do not carry into it.
Six. That is a hard limit set by Jagex, raised from four earlier in development, and no host can go above it. If you see a provider advertising larger Dragonwilds servers, they are selling you something the game will not do.
Yes. Your buildings, your stored resources and your progression are all held server side, so they are there when you come back and other members of your group can play without you. We take automatic backups of that save, because losing weeks of a shared world to a bad patch is a genuinely bad day.
The server config is deliberately small: the server name, the world it loads, an admin password and an optional world password. Being straight about what is not there, since some hosts imply otherwise: there is no difficulty setting in the dedicated server config. Difficulty is a property of the world itself, chosen when it is created, and it does not reliably survive being moved onto a dedicated server, so pick it deliberately at the start.
We are templating it now, with config editing, save management, automatic backups and update handling. One quirk we are working through first: a Dragonwilds server will not start without an Owner ID, which is a specific player's in-game identifier. That does not fit neatly into a flow where the server is built before you have logged in, so we are solving it properly rather than making you file a ticket on day one.

RuneScape: Dragonwilds is Jagex taking Gielinor into open world survival crafting. You land on the continent of Ashenfall with nothing, gather and cook and smith your way up through familiar RuneScape skills, build a base, and work toward the dragons the game is named for. It carries the skill grind and the humour of the MMO, but the structure is survival co-op rather than a persistent world. Dragonwilds is built for small groups, and a dedicated server is what turns a few sessions into a real save. Your world keeps its progress while you are offline, everyone joins without waiting for a host, and nobody loses a night of building because the person hosting had to go to bed. For a group playing across timezones it is the difference between a world and a series of disconnected evenings. Jagex publish the dedicated server as a free separate download, which is what we run.
