No. Unknown Worlds built the original Subnautica as a single player game and never added multiplayer to it. Every multiplayer Subnautica server, ours included, runs Nitrox, an open source community modification that syncs the world between players. The official multiplayer game is Subnautica 2, which is a separate product and, as things stand, has no announced dedicated server tool of its own.

Nitrox is an open source multiplayer mod for Subnautica, in active development for years by a volunteer community and released under a licence that permits commercial hosting. It synchronises world state, bases, vehicles and resources across players, and ships a dedicated server so the world does not depend on one player hosting.

It is a community mod reverse engineering a single player game, so it carries rough edges: occasional desyncs, some systems that sync less completely than others, and breakage when Subnautica itself updates. Thousands of people play it happily anyway, and several hosts sell it. We would rather say that plainly than sell you something and let you find out.

Yes. Nitrox is version sensitive, and clients on a different Nitrox or Subnautica build will not connect. This is why we treat version control as a feature rather than an afterthought: the server stays on a known good build and you decide when to move, so a Nitrox release does not lock your group out of its own world mid-playthrough.

Nitrox will accept a large number technically, but it is designed and tested around small groups. Around five players is the realistic sweet spot, and larger groups run into more desync and performance issues the further you push it.

We are templating it now, with version control, save management, world backups and config editing from the panel. One honest caveat on timing: unlike most games we host, Nitrox has no free standalone server download, so the server needs a licensed copy of Subnautica on it. We are working out the right way to do that before we take anyone's money, rather than the shortcut some hosts use of asking customers for their Steam password.
