Yes. Bugbear publish a dedicated server as a free separate tool on Steam, so you are not waiting on the developer for the basics. It is Early Access software and still receiving multiplayer connection and sync fixes, so treat it as maturing rather than finished, but it is genuinely usable for a league today.
A rebuilt physics engine, which is Bugbear's own framing rather than ours, and a deeper damage model on top of it. It is in Early Access, so the content list is still growing through numbered updates, but the multiplayer is already why most people are playing it.
Event rotation, damage settings, car class restrictions and the server rules, through the server config file. We will expose them in the panel's config editor so a league can change format without an FTP client.
Sometimes, and it is the honest risk of running an Early Access game competitively. A client update lands and everyone needs the matching server build on the same night. We handle the server side of that with automatic updates, and where an update is disruptive we would rather you hear it from us than from your drivers.
Twenty four is the standard full grid, the same as the original. Smaller fields work well for derby events and private league nights.
Wreckfest 1 if you want the deeper content library and the larger playerbase: it has a well stocked Steam Workshop and roughly double the concurrent players. Wreckfest 2 if you want the newer physics and you are comfortable with Early Access. Wreckfest 2 has no Steam Workshop category yet, which is the single biggest practical difference. Plenty of leagues run both, which is why we list both.

Wreckfest 2 is Bugbear rebuilding the demolition derby racer on a new engine, with a damage model they have pushed further than the original. It is in Early Access and gaining content steadily through numbered content updates, and the multiplayer is already the reason most people are playing it. Bugbear ship a dedicated server tool alongside the game, and it is the right way to run a regular group. You control the event rotation, the damage settings, car class restrictions and the server rules, and your grid connects to a fixed address rather than a peer hosted lobby that dies when the host quits. For a league running weekly meets, that consistency is the product. We are templating Wreckfest 2 now, with server config editing from the panel, event rotation management and automatic updates through Early Access. Being straight about the Early Access part: Bugbear are still shipping multiplayer connection and sync fixes, so expect the occasional patch that needs your whole grid on the new build at once.
