The game is free to play and Northwood Studios publishes the server files at no cost, which is exactly why the community-server scene is so large. What you pay us for is the hardware, the network, the DDoS protection and a panel that manages plugins, configs and updates instead of you doing it over SSH.
Yes, and it is the main reason to run your own server. Both frameworks are current in 2026 and they behave differently in one way worth knowing before you commit: LabAPI ships inside the server build, so it survives a game update, while EXILED is maintained separately and usually needs a few days to catch up after Northwood patches. If your server depends on EXILED plugins, expect that gap.
The server's own default is twenty, and Northwood's minimum hardware guidance is written around roughly twenty five. Verified servers can go up to sixty. Bigger is not automatically better here: the class balance is built around a facility with a certain density of people in it, so very large and very small rounds both play quite differently from the intended experience.
Only if you verify it. Northwood operates a server verification system, and verification is what gets you a public listing. It comes with rules about what your server may do, a sixty slot ceiling, and a token that is revoked if the server sits offline for fourteen days. Unverified servers still work perfectly well for a private group joining directly.
Realistically, no, and we would rather say so than sell you the idea. SCP: Secret Laboratory checks that client and server versions match, and Steam updates players' clients automatically, so a server held back on an older build is a server nobody can connect to. There is also no previous-stable branch published to hold on. The practical approach is the one the community uses: run LabAPI where you can, and expect a short gap after each update while EXILED plugins are rebuilt.

It is built for community servers: the official ones are a small fraction of the population, and the game has thrived for years on servers run by the people who play them. The server files are free and published by Northwood Studios, which is why the community-server scene is so large. The plugin ecosystem around EXILED and LabAPI goes deep: custom roles, custom items, round modifiers, economy systems, and event modes that turn a horror round into something else entirely.
