Technically no, but practically yes. Without a caves shard, a huge chunk of DST's content is inaccessible. Our dedicated servers run both shards out of the box so you never have to worry about the shard wiring.
For dedicated servers, yes. You generate a cluster token (90+ characters, starting with pds-) at accounts.klei.com and paste it into your server's Cluster Token setting in the panel. One-time setup – our Getting Started guide walks you through it.
Our servers include 10 GB RAM by default, which is comfortable for a 6-player world with a full mod list. Heavier modded setups can bump to 15, 20, 25 or 30 GB through configurable resources on your plan.
Don't Starve Elsewhere is Klei's new standalone co-op survival game announced April 2026 – different world, different story, 3D movement, new biomes and mechanics. DST is not being replaced; Klei is supporting both in parallel.

Don't Starve Together is Klei's long-running multiplayer spin of Don't Starve – a cartoon-gothic survival sandbox where up to six players band together to forage, farm, fight, and generally fail upward against a world built to starve them. Released in 2016, DST has stayed one of the most-played co-op survival games on Steam thanks to Klei's consistent stream of free content updates, a huge active modding scene, and a learning curve that bites back no matter how many hours you have. Running a dedicated server is the sensible way to play DST with a regular group. DST's multi-shard architecture (an overworld and a caves shard running side-by-side) means that hosting on someone's PC works fine for a one-off session, but breaks down the moment that person isn't around to start the server. A managed cluster keeps both shards persistent, handles Steam Workshop mod sync automatically, and survives players dropping in and out at weird hours. Everything on the Workshop Just Works with no extra config – mods drop in from your mod-configuration settings and the server grabs them on next start. Klei announced Don't Starve Elsewhere at the Triple-i Initiative showcase in April 2026 – the first fully original Don't Starve release since DST dropped. Klei has been clear that DST isn't going anywhere; both games will be supported in parallel, which means the group you've been playing with for years has no reason to retire the world. If anything, DS:Elsewhere is giving long-time DST servers fresh life.
