Enshrouded Update 8 "Forging the Path" – Server Guide for April 21

Update 8 lands April 21 with heavy attacks, weapon ultimates, dodge i-frames, and smarter enemy AI. Here's what server admins need to know before patch day.

Keen Games has been drip-feeding details about Enshrouded's Update 8 – "Forging the Path" – through a series of dev blogs over the past couple of weeks, and I've been pulling it all apart to figure out what actually matters for those of us running dedicated servers. The update drops April 21, 2026, and while it's not a content expansion in the traditional sense, the combat overhaul is substantial enough that your players are going to notice the difference the moment they log in.

I'll walk through the big changes and then get into the practical stuff – updating your server, save compatibility, and anything config-related.

The Combat Overhaul

Update 8 is fundamentally a systems patch. Keen Games has said outright that this isn't about new zones or enemy types – it's about making the existing combat feel significantly better ahead of the Autumn 1.0 launch. Three headline features carry the weight here.

Heavy attacks are the simplest addition. Hold the attack button instead of tapping it and you'll throw a slower, higher-damage strike that consumes more stamina. The animation changes depending on your weapon type, and you get limited stagger immunity against smaller enemies during the windup.

Weapon special skills are the flashier system. Every weapon type now has a unique ultimate ability – a resource bar fills as you land hits, and when it's full you can unleash a weapon-specific finisher. The examples shown so far include wand users firing a large AoE orb, two-handed weapons executing a full 360-degree cleave, and daggers delivering a concentrated burst-damage combo. You get stagger immunity during the animation so you can actually land these without getting knocked out of them.

Dodge i-frames might be the change that reshapes combat the most. A new skill called "Strategic Maneuver" – sitting between the red and green skill trees – replaces the standard dodge roll with one that grants brief invincibility frames during the animation. If you've played any Soulslike game, you know exactly how this works. Worth noting that it reportedly replaces the dodge rather than stacking with the Blink ability, so your players will need to make a meaningful choice there.

Two-Handed Weapons and Melee Adjustments

Greatswords got the biggest love. The old animations were too slow to reliably build the new ultimate bar, so they've been reworked with faster, more horizontal swings. Greataxes and hammers received diagonal moveset adjustments to improve their flow.

On the subtler side, Keen Games has scaled back the auto-targeting gap closers – you won't automatically leap across half the arena toward a distant mob anymore. Movement is more deliberate now. Mid-air attacks like Upward Slash and Crashdown have been reworked for better targeting, and they've added ledge safety logic so you don't accidentally throw yourself off a cliff while swinging at something near an edge.

Enemy AI Gets Smarter

Some enemies will now actively dodge projectile attacks. The dev blog didn't go deep on specifics, but this has obvious implications for bow, wand, and staff builds – expect higher miss rates against certain mobs.

Adventure Sharing V1

A new community feature lets players share and browse each other's builds – think read-only world instances where you can visit someone's fortress, puzzle course, or trap gauntlet. It's an early version of what will likely become a bigger feature at 1.0.

What Server Admins Need to Know

Updating your server on LOW.MS. Log into your control panel at control.low.ms, navigate to your Enshrouded server, and run Steam Update from the sidebar. That pulls the latest build. I'd recommend doing this as soon as the update goes live on April 21 – your players won't be able to connect if the server is running a mismatched version. If you need a hand, our getting started guide walks through the panel basics.

Save compatibility. Keen Games hasn't flagged any save-breaking changes for Update 8. Since the update focuses on combat mechanics, animation systems, and AI behaviour rather than world generation or progression restructuring, existing worlds should load without issue. That said, take a manual backup before updating – it takes thirty seconds via Cloud Backup in the panel.

Server configuration. No new enshrouded_server.json settings have been announced for this update specifically. The combat changes are all client-side mechanics that don't appear to expose server-side tuning. Your existing server settings should carry over without modification. If new settings do surface in the actual patch notes on April 21, I'll update this post and our server settings guide accordingly.

Performance considerations. Combat overhauls can sometimes increase server tick load due to more complex hit detection and AI calculations. If you're running a server near capacity (16 players), keep an eye on performance after the update via Current Activity & Stats in the panel.

Pre-Update Checklist

  1. Back up your world save through the control panel
  2. Let your players know about the combat changes – some builds (especially ranged-only) might need rethinking
  3. Schedule your update window for shortly after the patch drops to avoid version mismatch issues
  4. Check the troubleshooting guide if you hit any snags

Update 8 is clearly a setup patch for the 1.0 launch later this year. The combat was Enshrouded's weakest point for a long time, and from what I've seen in the dev blogs, these changes should make it feel substantially more responsive and rewarding. If you haven't spun up an Enshrouded server yet, now's a decent time – getting a world established before 1.0 means you're ready when the big content drop lands.
